What Products Are Recommended ?

In the past we've used and recommended the Dog Appeasing Pheromone (DAP) type products that are now marketed by Adaptil. They seemed to work sometimes but were very expensive, often being sold by Vets.

A dog breeder that we are friends with suggested that we try the Pet Remedy products, suggesting that they were more effective and cheaper. We tried them and we have to agree with our dog breeder friends, these products do indeed work in quite a number of cases. Another product that we've included is a product called Rescue Remedy. This is recommended for ANY pets and has been used successfully with dogs, cats, birds, horses, reptiles and fish !. We've only used it on dogs but in one particular case it definitely worked where Pet Remedy and DAP had shown no results whatsoever. Finally, we've included Zylkene capsules which are made from casein (milk protein) because these have proven very popular and effective especially when treating dogs whose lives are made a misery by fireworks.

Pet Remedy Plug-In Diffuser
As its name suggests, the diffuser plugs into an electrical socket and emits the calming odour of a blend of essential oils including valerian, vetivert, basil sweet, and sage. It is ideal for all pets. The pack is supplied with a travel diffuser that a couple of drops of the Pet Remedy liquid are dropped onto and which is then used in the car or basket when travelling.
Pet Remedy Diffuser Refills
The pack contains 2 x refills for the Pet Remedy Diffuser
Pet Remedy Spray
The spray contains a slow release blend of essential oils that have been proven to calm animals without actually sedating them. A quick spray onto the trousers before walking the dog will hopefully keep him calm and by your side. Although a quick spray onto the top of the dog's neck will work well, you have to be careful not to spray it in a place where the dog can lick it. It's probably safer to spray it on pet bedding, carpets, soft furnishings or in the car.

Rescue Remedy
Rescue Remedy is a homeopathic remedy for anxiety in pets. It is alcohol-free, making it suitable for dogs with sensitive skin. It is easily applied with a dropper and can be added to drinking water, placed directly into the dog's mouth or rubbed gently into the dog's nose, ear or paw. Although more expensive than the Pet Remedy products, Rescue Remedy has worked wonders on certain animals that Pet Remedy had no effect on. Our adive would be to try the Pet Remedy spray or diffuser first. If that doesn't show results then give Rescue Remedy a try, it's a totally different product which does seem to work on a different subset of problem pets.

Zylkene Capsules - 10 x 225mg Capsules
Zylkène is a complementary feed for cats and dogs which contains a natural product, derived from casein, a protein in milk. It is a molecule well known to promote the relaxation of newborns after breastfeeding. Launched in April 2008, Zylkène has become a familiar product for veterinary surgeons, behaviourists, nurses and pet owners for use in helping pets cope when facing unusual and unpredictable situations or before occasions such as a change in their normal environment. - See more at: http://www.zylkenepet.co.uk/learn-more-about-zylk%c3%a8ne.html#sthash.g7akEC1u.dpuf

Dosage

Dogs 10-15kg - 1 x 225mg capsule per day

Dogs 15-30kg - 2 x 225mg capsules or 1 x 450mg capsule per day

Dogs 30-60kg - 2 x 450mg capsules per day

With just once daily administration, Zylkène is very easy to give and because Zylkène is a product derived from milk, it is also very palatable and well accepted by both dogs and cats.

There are several ways to administer Zylkène:

> By opening the capsule and mixing with your pet’s usual food or as a treat.

> By mixing with liquids, such as the oil from a tin of tuna (Zylkène is water soluble).

Ideally Zylkène supplementation should be started a few days before required, for example before the fireworks season begins or before a kennel or cattery stay.

Our pets are often clever at associating differences in our behaviour and relating them to an upcoming change in their environment or lifestyle, especially when the activity is repeated. These changes in our behaviour are known as ‘cues’. An example is when your dog or cat may have learned that the activity of packing a suitcase means a stay in the kennel or cattery for them. This is a typical situation where Zylkène should be started the day before you get your suitcase from its normal storage place.

For long term scenarios such a new born baby into the family, Zylkène should be given for a minimum of 1-2 months or even longer if necessary.
